The Rule of Law Section, as a part of the Human Dimension Department of the OSCE Mission to Bosnia and Herzegovina conducts a country-wide trial monitoring programme of criminal cases, which aims to ensure that case processing complies with the Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) Constitution, international human rights instruments, and BiH’s international commitments. Findings of the monitoring program are used by the Rule of Law Section to promote necessary judicial and legal reforms and to provide assistance, advice, and training to the judiciary. Particular focus on is on accountability for war crimes, hate crimes, human trafficking, and other major crimes. The Rule of Law Section requires the services of two Interns to provide assistance to the Legal Advisers in the field of judicial and legal reform within BiH. The Interns will be directly reporting to the respective Legal Advisers to whom they are assigned, and in the second instance, to the Head of Rule of Law.
Tasks and Responsibilities
- Conducting in-depth legal research in the area of international humanitarian law, international criminal law, international human rights law, public international law, and other relevant fields of law, such as hate crimes, human trafficking, and major crimes such as corruption and terrorism;
- Assisting in the preparation of background papers, reports, speeches, talking points and letters;
- Attending and summarizing conferences and meetings;
- Assisting in the organization of events related to the work of the Rule of Law Section;
- Performing other duties as assigned.
- Be between 19 and 30 years old on the date of the deadline of this vacancy notice;
- Have completed two years of full-time undergraduate studies OR one year of full-time graduate studies, from an accredited institution; OR have completed a first degree in law no longer than two years ago by the date of the deadline of the vacancy notice;
- Knowledge of international legal standards, procedure and instruments, in particular in relation to international human rights law and international criminal law;
- Professional fluency in English with excellent communication skills;
- Professional fluency in BCS would be an advantage;
- Strong analytical, research and drafting skills;
- Previous experience in working/interning for a judicial institution, international organizations, or diplomatic service, as well as knowledge of international humanitarian law would be an asset;
- Excellent IT knowledge, familiarity with Microsoft Office and Internet applications;
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with people from different national and cultural backgrounds, whilst maintaining impartiality and objectivity;

The OSCE is not in a position to pay any remuneration or cover any expenses incurred by the intern during his/her stay in Sarajevo nor reimburse travel expenses. However, interns selected who are non-residents of Sarajevo may be eligible for some compensation towards their living costs in Sarajevo. The internship lasts up to six (6) months and does not constitute a commitment to future employment with the OSCE. The selected intern interns shall provide the OSCE with evidence that he/she has health insurance coverage which is valid for Bosnia and Herzegovina, otherwise he/she shall be obliged to join the OSCE group health insurance scheme for the period of their internship, at their own expense. The OSCE will cover life and disability insurance for the duration of internship.
