Local Intern

The overall purpose of assignment
The national intern will learn about international cooperation and specifically receive insights in the topics of rule of law in the western Balkans, combatting migrant smuggling and trafficking in human beings, victim protection, integrated border management and the wider EU policy framework as implemented in the region. Furthermore, the national intern will have opportunity to learn more about EU security initiative EMPACT, and effective regional participation. and the alignment of WB 6 legislative and regulatory frameworks to the EU acquis. Drawing from the actions four pillars –
- Enhancing the Western Balkans law enforcement's ability to combat smuggling and trafficking;
- Strengthening the cooperation between Western Balkans and EU actors in antitrafficking efforts, especially EMPACT;
- Improving victim identification and protection mechanisms in the Western Balkans; and
- Strenghtening border authority capacities to combat smuggling, aligned with EU standards.
The national intern will have an opportunity to learn the details of the holistic, multi-stakeholder 4- P approach: Prevention, Protection, Prosecution and Partnership. At the same time, the national intern will support the overall implementation of project activities in the area of results-based monitoring, data collection, research, analysis, knowledge identification and documentation.
Main tasks and responsibilities
The national intern will assume the following tasks and responsibilities:
- Support the Project Manager and team in the implementation of the project’s objectives concerning the following fields of action:
- Support the design, development and implementation of the steering process and all relevant activities (e.g., meetings, workshops, and other events);
- Support the organisation of the Rule of Law Breakfast;
- Support the compilation and editing of project publications, reports, and presentations;
- Support the implementation of communication activities;
- Contribute to the maintenance and further development of the monitoring and evaluation systems/databases/templates;
- Support the design, development and implementation of an envisioned outcome harvesting / impact assessment and lessons learned needed for the purpose of evidence-based project steering and reporting;
- Coordinate meeting requests on behalf of the line manager, liaising with stakeholders to schedule appointments, prepare agendas and meeting minutes, and distribute relevant materials in a timely manner.
- Perform other duties and tasks as required and needed for the overall project implementation.
Required qualifications, competences and skills
Qualifications
- University degree (bachelor), in the fields of Rule of Law, Peace Studies, International Relations and/or Development Studies.
Other knowledge, additional competences
- Excellent knowledge of the English language in writing and in speech;
- Experience in analytical work and research;
- Experience in supporting editing processes and formatting;
- Proficient knowledge and hands-on experience in using of the Microsoft Office suite;
- High degree of organisation and an eye for details;
- Good communication skills and excellent interpersonal skills;
- Previous working experience will be considered an asset.
Location: GIZ offices are located in Sarajevo.
Expected start date: 01/02/2026
Duration: The internship is offered with a duration of 6 months
