The 2019 Grassroots Justice Prize:
Celebrating Great Deeds In Legal Empowerment
The biennial Grassroots Justice Prize competition is the world’s only competition recognizing grassroots organizations and institutions, large and small, across the globe, that are working to put the power of law into people’s hands.
This year, we are offering 3 prizes of $10,000 USD.
The competition will honor the work of non-profits, social enterprises, and public institutions that have demonstrated remarkable innovation, impact, and/or sustainability in their legal empowerment work.
Legal empowerment is about helping people to know, use, and shape the laws that affect them. Eligible projects might use a community paralegal approach to address gender-based violence or may provide legal education on citizenship rights. The key is that they are using legal empowerment to help people overcome injustice in any of its varied forms.
The deadline to apply is now Sunday, March 24th at 23:59 GMT.
“This award put our work on the world stage. For a small NGO, the prize money was crucial to expand our team and scale our legal empowerment efforts in India.”
– Jayshree Satpute, co-founder of Nazdeek, 2015 Grassroots Justice Prize winner. Learn more about the 2015 competition and the grand prize winner, Nazdeek, here.
“It can be a lonely battle – it’s you against a very unresponsive world, and all of a sudden you discover that somebody else out there has recognized what you are doing. It gives a boost, it gives you greater power to continue doing what you are doing.”
– Eliahu Abram, board member of Kav LaOved, a 2017 Grassroots Justice Prize winner. Learn more about the 2017 competition and its three winners here.
